Chickasha’s Festival of Light opens Sat, Nov. 17
For the past 26 years, the
Festival of Light has brought
visitors from all over the United
States to our hometown. It has
become a Christmas tradition
for many visitors to load up
the family, drive in and visit
our community, see the lights,
get a cup of hot chocolate from
the gift shoppe, and hear the
Christmas carols echoing in the
crisp, night air as they walk or
ride through the thousands of twinkling lights that adorn Shannon Springs Park.
The camel rides, horse drawn carriage rides, photos with Santa, a live Nativity
scene have added so much to the event. Recently, organizers have brought several
new features such as movies in the park, a laser tag arena, and even a Ferris wheel
and carousel. But that’s not all! Those who attend the Festival are now able to
order from the food truck pavillion located on the southwest side of Shannon
Springs Park or play laser tag at the mobile arena, just north of the gift shoppe.
Oklahoma turns 111
Oklahoma has a birthday coming up!!!
On Friday, November 16, the State officially
becomes 111 years old.
The land that today makes up Oklahoma
was added to the United States as part of the
Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Throughout the
19th century, the U.S. government relocated
various Indian tribes from the southeastern
United States to the Oklahoma area. By
1900, over 30 Indian tribes had been moved
to what was originally called the ‘Indian
Territories’.
At the same time, ranchers in Texas began
to move into the area in search of new
pasture lands and gold. The government
began opening the land to settlement,
creating “land runs” in which settlers were
allowed to cross the border at a particular hour to claim homesteads.
Settlers who ambiguously broke the law and crossed the border sooner than
allowed were called “sooners”. These ambitious landowners created the state’s
nickname, ‘The Sooner State’.
